Greater impact than expected

The ear is our gateway to communication. For an increasing number of people, however, this gateway is fading due to hearing impairment caused by noise exposure and age-related wear and tear. It is estimated that approximately 35 % of people over the age of sixty are affected by hearing loss.

If a person's ability to communicate fades, then this has an effect on everyone - not only those directly affected but their surroundings. The hearing impaired person often experiences increasing social isolation, and can begin to lack confidence in the company of others. This often puts a strain on relations with family members and friends, who are the first to notice that someone's hearing is not what it used to be.
